Resumé Resources
Gearing up for the internship and job search requires a good deal of "resumé confidence." To prepare for internship applications and career fairs, you need to create a resumé as soon as you start your academic studies at Georgia Tech. You might think you have a weak resumé, but most students "under sell" themselves in their resumés, forgetting at least 4-5 significant experiences that would make them more attractive to employers.
Steps towards creating a great resumé
- Create your resumé.
- Research and implement resumé tips and strategies
- Have at least 3 people review your resumé for errors and omissions.
Resumé Review
The career center reviews resumés on a daily basis, either through their walk-in hours, arranged appointments, or resumé preparation events. Kristin Young is the Ivan Allen College career advisor who meets with INTA students to discuss resumés, cover letters, interview skills, and general career questions.
Cover Letters
Many students neglect the importance of the cover letter in their internship and job searches even though the cover letter can actually be a stronger marketing tool than the resumé in some instances. While the resumé solely lists your experiences, the cover letter helps the employer see how your skills and experiences will make you a good fit for the position. It does not repeat what is listed on your resumé. The cover letter highlights how your experiences and skills from one job are transferable to this new position. For instance, if you worked in sales for a technology company and you want to move to working in consulting, the cover letter would explain to the employer how your sales skills (ability to work in teams, work under a deadline, travel extensively, develop new business, demonstrate leadership, manage clients and projects, and think creatively) transfer to the skills needed in consulting. If you have the opportunity to submit a cover letter, take advantage of it.
Career Services offers tips for writing cover letters and will review these letters for students.
