Academic Advising

Degree Petitions

During the semester prior to the graduation semester, INTA and IAML students must meet with their advisor(s) to complete the degree petition, which notifies the registrar that the student is preparing to graduate. EIA students will meet with the School of Economics. Specific deadlines for completing the degree petition are set each semester and will be e-mailed to students via the International Affairs and Economics listserves. A general guideline is that fall degree petitions are due July 1, spring degree petitions are due October 15, and summer degree petitions are due March 1. The degree petition process for INTA and IAML majors is as follows:

  1. All students will receive a notice from the INTA academic advisor inviting graduating students to meet to complete the degree petition paperwork. This notice will go out approximately one month before the deadline.
  2. A graduating student will respond to this e-mail with a date and time he or she is available to meet, to complete the degree petition paperwork.
  3. The advisor will confirm the degree petition meeting date and time via e-mail.
  4. The student should meet with the advisor at the designated time to complete degree petition. The student should bring minor paperwork if applicable. See “Minors” below.
  5. If the student is an IAML graduate, he or she should then see Dr. David Shook, Director of Undergraduate Programs for Modern Languages, for his signature on the petition. If the student is a co-op student, he or she should also visit the Office of Professional Practice for a signature. If the student is an International Plan student, he or she should visit the International Plan office for a signature.
  6. The student should go to the Bursar’s Office in Lyman Hall, next to Tech Tower, to pay the $25 graduation fee. The Bursar’s Office will stamp the degree petition to indicate payment of graduation fee. The student should keep the white copy as a record of payment.
  7. The student should go to the Registrar’s Office, located in the Tech Tower, to deliver the degree petition form and the CAPP graduation checklist the advisor completed at the degree petition meeting.
  8. A few weeks after the degree petition deadline, the registrar will post to the student’s OSCAR account any graduation deficiencies he or she will need to complete to graduate. If the account reads “OK,” then the student is cleared to graduate as long as he or she completes the needed courses during the final semester. While checking graduation status, students should also check that their names are spelled correctly for their diplomas.

Minors

If a student is pursuing a minor, the student will need to see the minor department to complete the minor paperwork and bring the form to the degree petition meeting for an advisor’s signature. The minor form needs to be submitted to the registrar with the degree petition.

Second Majors

If a student has completed a second major with another department on campus, the student must meet with that department to complete a second degree petition. Check with that department to find out its degree petition deadlines. That deadline might be earlier than the INTA deadline. Students completing the IAML degree complete one degree petition with the INTA advisor, then the Modern Language advisor must also sign to confirm completion of all language requirements. Please meet with the INTA advisor first to start the petition process.

EIA degree students should meet with the School of Economics.

Your Final Semester’s Schedule

If a student’s final semester’s schedule does not match the final semester’s schedule indicated on the degree petition, the student must e-mail his or her primary advisor (Stephanie Jackson for INTA and IAML; or Beverly Paul for EIA) to request that she inform the registrar about your change of schedule. The registrar will hold students to the final schedule listed on the degree petition. Any unreported deviation from the schedule will result in a hold on the student’s graduation. As soon as a student knows he or she will deviate from the final semester’s schedule listed on the degree petition, that person must e-mail his or her primary advisor so the schedule can be updated.
