Welcome!

The Georgia East Asia Research Schools (GEARS) is a three-university consortium (Emory, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State) located in Atlanta, the premiere city in the southern United States. Founded in 2004, GEARS provides an institutional framework for longstanding cooperative ties between the three schools. The regional impact is multiplied by ARCHE, an institutional agreement connecting 21 Atlanta area institutions of higher education, providing over 100,000 students and faculty with the ability to enroll in GEARS class and use the GEARS libraries.

This comprehensive regional institutional framework provides outreach to three premier
Historically Black Universities and Colleges (Clark Atlanta, Morehouse and Spellman), a premier women’s college (Agnes Scott) and Georgia’s largest commuter college (Kennesaw State, with 14,000 non-traditional students).

The greater Atlanta area is sixth nationally in enrolled students. From 1995-2005, enrollment in East Asian language grew at the GEARS schools, which feature strength in programs as diverse as performing arts and national security. GEARS grants for programs in Asian Studies include support from the Japan Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Luce Foundation.
