Research Focus
Chinese foreign relations and Asian international relations. Dr. Garver has authored nine books on Sino-Soviet, Sino-American, and Sino-Indian, Sino-Iranian, and Sino-Middle East relations, and nearly one hundred articles on Chinas foreign relations. He is a member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, participates frequently in various Asia policy related fora, and has lived for extended periods in China, Taiwan, India, and Pakistan. He speaks Chinese and German. He is the recipient of awards from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Committee on Scholarly Communications with the Peoples Republic of China, the Fulbright Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation, the U.S. Institute for Pakistan Studies, the Pacific Cultural Foundation, and the Smith Richardson Foundation. He set up, and directed for a number of years, an exchange program between Georgia Tech and Fudan University in Shanghai and a multi-country program on East Asian development. He currently serves on the editorial boards of The China Quarterly, The Journal of Contemporary China, Asia Security, and Issues and Studies.
